Coaching for performance and well-being
What Is Coaching?
It is not a surprise that many people do not know what coaching is. With the growth in coaching and all the specialisms that come with it (executive coaching, well-being coaching, ADHD coaching) its not surprising that its a bit of a minefield.
To be clear, a coach is not for life! Some coaching contracts only need 4 sessions whilst others may involve a long term contract. It depends on you, your goals, your situation and your levels of self awareness.
Coaching is built on a belief that individuals already hold the answers and that, with coaching, they can unlock their knowledge and create impactful change.
In today’s fast-moving work environment, people rarely have the time or space to step back, reflect, and access their own wisdom and many of us rarely get the opportunity to dig deep to gain clarity on our goals or current situation.
That’s where coaching comes in. A skilled coach is truly present, will create a safe space to ask questions and challenge assumptions so that individuals gain new perspectives. Creating space to truly think is probably the most impactful part of coaching.
And coaching is far more than just a good conversation. It’s a structured, intentional process designed to build awareness and drive change. It can be challenging or even emotional but always in service of the client’s growth and goals.
A strong coaching relationship is based on trust, a clear contract, and shared accountability for outcomes. When done well, coaching increases emotional intelligence, accelerates performance, enhances critical thinking and reflection, and supports transformational shifts for individuals, teams, and the wider organisation.
What can you expect ?
Effective coaching starts with a willingness to grow. You don’t need to have all the answers but you do need to be open to change.
Goal Setting
If you're not yet sure what your goal is, that’s perfectly okay. One of the first things a coach will help you do is clarify and prioritise what matters most. Your goal may evolve as coaching progresses which is a natural and valuable part of the process.
Compatibility Call
When you're ready to start, you can arrange a no-obligation compatibility call with one or more coaches to find the coach who is the right fit for you. This does not mean that you should find someone who will agree with everything you say! A coach is meant to challenge your perceptions and deepen your thinking. During the call you will be able to ask questions, get a feel for their coaching style, and decide who to take on.
Coaching Agreement
Once you’ve chosen your coach, you’ll receive a coaching agreement outlining the code of conduct, confidentiality, dates and expectations. Most clients begin with six sessions, typically meeting twice a month and then moving to monthly sessions and this can be flexible depending on the goal.
Review & Feedback
After the first few sessions, you and your coach will review your progress, revisit your goals, and give feedback. Many clients find that six sessions can be sufficient, especially if you do the work between coaching sessions, while others continue the coaching relationship for a longer time with a fresh goal.
Whatever your journey, coaching is a collaborative, goal-oriented process designed to help you move forward with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
